Irrigation Valve Boxes

Soft-cover landscaping access issues. Protect your sprinkler controls from being lost.

What is about to happen?

Fresh bark mulch is being layered deep, gravel beds are being installed, or aggressive ground cover plants are being added.

What hidden system could be affected?

The irrigation system valve boxes. These house the solenoids that turn your sprinkler zones on and off.

What clues or records may help?

Look for green or purple rectangular plastic lids flush with the soil, usually near the foundation, water meter, or clustered in flower beds. Ask the previous owner or the company that winters the system.

What does the visible surface not guarantee?

Valve boxes easily sink over time. If a previous landscaper put 2 inches of mulch over a sunken box, it will completely disappear until a leak forces you to find it.

What becomes expensive if wrong?

When a sprinkler zone refuses to shut off, you must access the valve to turn it off manually or replace the solenoid. If the box is lost under gravel or a new pathway, you will pay hourly rates for an irrigation tech to blindly track the wire with a wand, digging up the yard until they find it.

When should local confirmation happen?

Before adding large volumes of mulch, decorative rock, or hardscaping over existing garden beds where valves are typically hidden.
