Private Utility Covers

Before you obscure your property's lifelines.

What is about to happen?

A large surface project is happening, such as adding a thick layer of topsoil, pouring a concrete slab, or installing deep hardscaping.

What hidden system could be affected?

Private utility access covers. This includes water meter boxes, private gas shutoffs, underground electrical pull boxes, or communications vaults.

What clues or records may help?

Public 811 marks public utilities up to the meter, but not private lines. Look for small plastic or metal rectangles flush with the dirt near the street or house.

What does the visible surface not guarantee?

Overgrown grass and a thin layer of dirt can easily disguise a critical water shutoff valve. If it looks like plain yard, it might not be.

What becomes expensive if wrong?

In an emergency (like a burst pipe or electrical issue), first responders or plumbers need immediate access to these shutoffs. Digging through concrete or removing heavy pavers to find them is dangerous and expensive.

When should local confirmation happen?

If you know a line runs through the area but cannot find the access box, do not proceed. Hire a private utility locator to mark the area.
