Before Laying a Walkway

Check the path trajectory against known irrigation valves and utility access.

What is about to happen?

A flagstone, paver, or concrete walkway is being routed from the front to the back yard.

What hidden system could be affected?

Irrigation valve boxes and shallow private lighting wires.

What clues or records may help?

Look for the green rectangular boxes clustered near the side of the house.

What does the visible surface not guarantee?

It is tempting to run the walkway straight down the side yard, right over the utility easements.

What becomes expensive if wrong?

If a walkway covers the irrigation manifold, the entire sprinkler system cannot be serviced. The walkway will have to be partially demolished.

When should local confirmation happen?

During the path layout phase. If the path hits a valve box, either route the path around it or pay to have the manifold relocated.
