Mulch easily disguises flush lids and boxes. Know what you are burying.
A thick layer of bark or wood mulch is being spread across garden beds, foundation plantings, or large yard expanses.
Irrigation valve boxes, downspout pop-up emitters, cleanouts for french drains, and sometimes even low-profile septic risers.
Check previous landscaping plans or run the irrigation system manually to locate the valves before the mulch crew arrives.
A completely flat soil bed does not mean it is empty. Lids often sink over the years and sit just below the natural soil grade.
If an irrigation zone gets stuck on, the valve must be found to turn it off. If it is buried under 4 inches of fresh mulch, you will have to dig blindly, ruining the landscaping and paying hourly for the search.
Before the mulch is dumped. If you suspect buried access points, have a landscaper or irrigation tech raise the boxes to the new grade level.
Contact a Irrigation Specialist or Landscaper before you cover.
